Hair Loss Treatment- If You Have Alopecia Aerata

Monday, 7 September 2009

Alopecia Aerata is one of the common reasons of hair loss. This is an autoimmune disorder in which the body destroys its own hair. The hair is lost in coin sized patches and then comes back after some months or years. The pattern of loss and re- growth is unpredictable. Many people lose all the hair due to Alopecia Aerata. What treatment options are available? Let us discuss them so that you get your hair back as early as possible.

Minoxidil-

Minoxidil solution is a proven therapy for hair loss of this type. Once you begin applying minoxidil
you may see your hair growing again after about three months. You should consult your doctor about the strength of minoxidil solution that you should use.

Steroids-

Steroids can help regain hair in alopecia aearata. Your doctor will inject steroid on the balding patch. Topical application of steroids is not effective. Oral steroids may cause side effects. That is why steroids are always injected in the balding patch. Though the injections effective
they are painful.

Anthralin- this is an immunomodulator. It is a tar like substance and is applied for an hour and then washed away. Your doctor may combine more than one treatment for you.
All of these are proven methods. Trying natural or miracle products will only make you lose your precious money. Use time tested and science-backed solutions for hair loss.

Hair Loss Treatment Do Not Fret Little Fella There s Hope

So you are getting to the middle age when your body starts falling apart
or off as the case may be. Because of this you aren't as good at sports as you used to be
the opposite sex doesn't find you nearly as attractive as you used to be
and your family ask you if you are ok whenever they look at you because they think that you look ill. Well there's hope lads
not for the sports
but at least for the hair! That's right
there is good hair loss treatment options that will halt hair loss right in its tracks so that you can at least look like you are still the man (or at least not sick).

So why do you lose your hair in the first place? Well a great question with a complicated answer. Maybe I can dumb it down for you though. The first thing is that there is not a lot that can do on your own to change your genes (though there are hair loss treatment options that can disrupt the work of these genes). Yeah that's right this is another one of those pesky familial things
and no it's not that you wore your hat too much or picked the wrong hair gel.

The other thing that should at least make you feel better is that your going bald is not a result of you losing your manhood. In fact losing your hair is because you are a little to much of a man if you know what I am saying. Testosterone is what give you hair in all the places that you don't want it and in a slightly different form makes you lose it from the one place that you want it the most--your head. Testosterone is actually reduced to dihydroxy testosterone (DHT) which acts on the hair progenitor cells to shut down DNA replication and bring hair growth to a screeching halt. This process is mediated by an enzyme called alpha-1-reductase. It is the action of this enzyme that is inhibited by certain forms of hair loss treatment. These drugs keep the testosterone in its original form thereby stopping the action of DHT on the cells responsible for hair growth. These drugs work great unless you are an Olympic athlete where they are banned because they have been used by cheaters as cover up for performance enhancing drugs. They say it takes sacrifice to be an elite athlete and they mean it!

The other main hair loss treatment category is the surgical implantation of hair (which of course has to be coupled with the above pharmaceuticals). This use to be the best way to get people to laugh at you and not with you as it left cornrows in a rather sad and unalterable way whether you like that look or not. Now however doctors have begun to be a bit more artistically random with their implants. Now you can get realistic looking hair replacement.

Hair Loss Stem Cell Therapy A New Technique

Since 1990s stem cells are used in many treatments. Nowadays for hair regeneration
hair loss stem cell therapy is proving to be a good technique.

First of all we need to know what stem cell is. Stem cells are the first building blocks of our body. We all started as a stem cell and then subsequently divided into millions of cells as we grew over time. Then a reverse process of decreasing stem cells starts
as we get older. The process gets faster if we suffer from diseases like heart attack
stroke
cancer
diabetes etc.

In stem cell therapy
stem cells are used as a replacement of damaged or dead cells in the body. On the scalp dead cells don’t grow hair and the area becomes bare
which we call bald. Now if we replace the dead cells on the scalp with new ones through stem cell therapy then the bald spot can be transformed into an area full of hair. This is the basic premise of stem cell therapy for treating baldness. After using this therapy to treat baldness
particularly male pattern baldness
some have experienced good results and some have not had good results. The research is still on and hopefully the success rate will improve in the coming years.

In the scientific lab
stem cells are produced and then these cells are injected in the bald areas of the scalp. If the first attempt to generate hair does not work then the doctors try again but the result is not guaranteed as the process is at an initial stage. If you want to try stem cell therapy for hair loss you can contact a dermatologist for the purpose.

Hair Loss Solutions Bonafide Cures or Bald Face Lies

PART 1

Very much a highlighted news topic
the stem cell research controversy continues. Reasons for the “need” of research include possible help for persons with terminal cancer
Alzheimer’s disease
Parkinson’s disease
spinal cord injury…and hair loss.

Hair loss is an important subject for the many men and women who experience it. The careless remarks and gratuitous jokes about baldness made by people with full heads of hair only add to their humiliation. Some people even experience anger that their hairline threatens to become as receded as the waters of the Red Sea for the Hebrews so many years ago.

Countless people wonder whether or not there really exists a cure for hair loss. Before we answer that question
we should first answer the questions
“What is hair loss?” and “What causes it?”

What is Hair Loss?

The term “Alopecia
” more commonly known as “baldness
” includes various disorders that involve the lack of hair where it would normally grow; especially when it involves the head. The most common form of baldness is a progressive hair-thinning condition that occurs in some adults.

Each piece of hair has a follicle located at the end of the hair shaft. Follicles act as the hair’s incubator;” it is where the hair is produced. Each strand of hair has a matrix
located at the base of the follicle. Cells in this area produce keratin
a tough protein that makes up the hair shaft
and melanin. Melanin stains the keratin
giving hair its color.

The activity of each follicle is dependant on surrounding follicles. Healthy hair follicles continuously grow. About 85% of the hair follicles on a healthy scalp are actively growing at the same time
and hair loss is not a problem.

Each strand of hair continues to grow for about 4 years
before going into a dormant period of about 4 months. On an average
only about 15% of the total amount of hair follicles on a healthy scalp is dormant at any one time. It is when a higher percentage of hair follicles stop growing at one time that hair loss becomes a problem.

What Happens During Hair Loss

Follicles are nourished by a network of capillaries
bringing nutrients to the base of the follicle. The amount of blood available to the scalp and to the follicles is determined by the health of the capillaries in the scalp
as well as the arteries in the neck and temple.

Problems develop when hair follicles do not receive proper nourishment. For instance
some women experience noticeable hair thinning after menopause
after the production of estrogen slows down or stops. Hair loss in women is usually more diffuse then in men. Women seldom have bold spots; a large area of the head may show sparse hair growth instead. Only about 15% of women are afflicted by such a high degree of hair loss that it becomes obvious.

In men the hormone DHT can harm hair follicles
making them shrink
or cause them to prematurely enter into the resting stage of the hair cycle. When this happens the result is often the characteristic U-shaped pattern of hair loss at the top of the head.

What Causes Hair Loss?

Predisposition can be one factor as to why one person begins losing their hair as they age
while another person does not. Various other disorders
such as obesity
allergies
and diabetes can also be attributed to predisposition. Sometimes hair loss can be the result of side effects caused by certain prescription drugs. Of course
these factors can often be countered.

Where you may not be able to reverse predisposition
you can sometimes contain it. By changing lifestyle
maintaining a customized healthcare regimen
and eating a well-balanced diet
many such factors can be alleviated or turned around.

More about Hair Loss

When it comes counteracting or slowing down the process of hair loss
products such as Rogaine
Dutasteride
and Propecia can help. Scalp exercises and massages using special preparations can also help.

Telogen Effluvium (TE) is a type of hair loss more common in women then men. It is characterized by high numbers of hairs that enter into the resting stage of the hair cycle
all at one time. This usually causes profuse shedding
as opposed to bald patches. This can be an overwhelming experience for women
especially those who once had luxuriant hair.

TE can be brought on by prolonged emotional or physical stress
severe illness
post-pregnancy hormone changes
or crash dieting. Once the triggering factor has been removed
TE hair loss usually stops. Hair can grow back in even without treatment
usually in 6 months to a year.

With proper treatment
hair growth can be accelerated. Some professionals recommend bringing the level of iron stored in the body up to 70 or 80 ng/ml (nanograms per milliliter). The range of iron normally stored in a woman’s body might be between 12 – 50; the lower end not high enough to speed hair growth.

Rogaine can also be used for a few months to start the TE recovery process; once hair does begin to grow back in
Rogaine use can stop.

As mentioned earlier
crash dieting can trigger TE in both men and women. As a matter of fact
diets of less than 1
200
calories a day can trigger sudden hair loss. This is especially true of diets low in protein. When the body lacks proper protein it “borrows” by shifting healthy hairs into dormancy to conserve protein.

Although hair loss resulting from inadequate diets is most often temporary
it can result in permanent loss of hair in persons genetically predetermined towards hair loss. Also
extreme weight loss in men can increase the production of androgens – male sex hormones that kill hair follicles. Once hair follicles are destroyed
there can be no re-growth of hair.

Hair Loss Solutions

A common problem

As it happens
we do not even notice when out hair starts to fall out and recede. Surprisingly
we lose and average of fifty to one hundred hairs daily. That is a lot but with recent scientific studies they have found many new hair loss solutions. There are three main ways to save your hair and as you read this article you will better understand everything you need to know about hair loss and how to prevent it.

What is Hair Loss?

What is hair loss? Well this is the point in time when your hair starts to shed. This will gradually start to daily. You lose hair but it is not noticeable at first unless you have long hair. The main reason that scientist think hair loss occurs is because your scalp needs to absorb more nutrients and some of your hair will need to move out of the way for it to do that. The other reason would be because your hair may start to die out
new hair is made to come in and replace it.

Preventing Hair Loss

One way to prevent hair loss would be to let nature do its job. Instead of using all that high-tech equipment and all those medicines and creams
you can allow your hair to grow naturally. By treating your hair right from the start your chances of keeping it in place rise dramatically. Who needs those fancy hair loss solutions?

Speak to your doctor

Speaking to your doctor or physician about what types of creams and pills or other hair loss solutions they recommend you use is a good idea. Since all of these items have been made for you to use for your hair
you can go out and buy them right?

Wrong
even though your hair may grow back you may pick up different sicknesses from these items. In order for your hair to successfully grow back the pills or creams interfere with your hair growing hormones. If they possibly interfere with any other hormones
then you are in very big trouble.

Treatments

The other way to help with hair loss is to go in for laser treatment. The way this works is that the laser technician will remove hair from areas where there is a lot of it. The bad thing about this is that they only have the ability to take out two to four hairs at a time. After the hair is removed
the insertion of it into your scalp begins. That has got to hurt! Using needles to insert the hair is very time consuming and painful; good thing you are knocked out!

These kinds of hair loss solutions cost a lot of money and can even be harmful. The rays of the laser are very strong and could damage your skin so you may want to research other hair loss solutions first.

Now that you have learned about hair loss and different hair loss solutions you will hopefully make the right decision on how to restore your hair to its former glory. The saying "beauty takes pain" has come to a whole new level!

Hair Loss Shampoo A Cheaper Solution to Your Dilemma

Sunday, 6 September 2009

Most people will think that hair loss is closely associated with old age. Yes
it may be but then it may not also. Confusing? Nah. Some people in a very young age experience a tremendous hair loss. Medical research though asserts that hair fall is quite normal because an average hair fall of up to 200 hair strands in a day is acceptable. But if there is so much than that
it now gives you a reason to panic and seek the help of the experts.

Dealing with hair loss is not at all easy. It is not simply the same with dealing with a bad haircut. A bad haircut can be remedied. You can likewise only wait for a while before it gets back to its normal growth. But a hair loss is entirely different. Having too much visible hair loss is a thing to hate. Who wants to go out almost as bald-looking as a bird can be? Who would want to look old in the first place? Hair loss confronts both men and women regardless of their ages. But then again
it would be easier for someone who is in his or her 60s to deal with the hair loss dilemma compared to a person under 30 years old. More so
women are more prone to hair loss than it is with men. Men can accept the fact that at a certain point in their lives
they will be facing the problem.

Would you not look better with plenty of hair? Then you can always get a treatment for your hair loss problem. Hair loss shampoos come in a variety. These products are recognized by specialists to aid you in growing back your hair. Those of you who want to maintain a good looking aura will obviously be very willing to spend money on hair loss shampoos. It is not after all only a matter of looking good. It is more of feeling good inside and out. So that you will not be wasting money on any hair loss shampoo
why not try researching things first?

What you must first deal with is finding out the real cause of your hair loss. This is essential as it is that which determines the right hair loss shampoo for you to use. Some of the most common causes of hair loss are stress
pregnancy
genetic background
and hair pulling. Most probably
the most obvious cause for hair loss is the plugged hair follicle and this can easily be remedied by hair loss shampoo. Take note that you must beware regarding the publicity stunts of most hair loss shampoo. They would always claim that they can be trusted when it comes to solving your problem when in fact they cannot help you at all. The best thing for you to do is to get to a specialist who can prescribe you the proper hair loss shampoo to use.

If the hair loss problem is now on a higher level and cannot in any way be solved by the hair loss shampoo
specialists recommend the hair transplantation method. This is almost a hundred percent effective but very expensive too. Before you make up your mind when it comes to the surgery
first get several opinions from the specialists. They can give you some less expensive alternatives. Obviously
the hair loss shampoo is cheaper. Hair loss is not a thing to be ignored. Better act on it while it is still early.

Hair Loss Scalp Disorder Seborrheic Dermatitis

There can be several disorders or diseases that result in hair loss. Hair loss is an indication that there can be a problem that is happening inside your body. One disorder that is related to the changes on the scalp is known as seborrheic dermatitis. This is a common inherited disorder and should be treated continuously and as soon as possible.

Seborrheic dermatitis is also often known as dandruff
eczema or cradle cap. When you have seborrheic dermatitis
you experience a change in the skin texture on your scalp. This will include either greasy or oily areas over the scalp or white flakes that are coming from your scalp. You are also likely to experience itching and redness in the scalp area
and also hair loss.

If you notice any of the above mentioned symptoms
then you may be having seborrheic dermatitis. For treatment
you can use a medicated shampoo for direct application on your scalp. Depending on the shampoo
it will contain a variety of ingredients that will help.

If the medicated shampoo fails to arrest your hair loss and scalp disorder
you can get a prescribed medication from a health care provider in order to get rid of seborrheic dermatitis. These shampoos will contain medications such as salicylic acid
coal tar
zinc
resorcin and selenium. The prescribed medications will have stronger amounts of these ingredients in them
as well as added ketoconazole and corticosteroids. You can also massage your head in order to get the balance in the scalp back to a normal condition. This is especially effective with children who are dealing with seborrheic dermatitis.

While seborrheic dermatitis can easily be treated with the right shampoos and care for the hair
it cannot easily be prevented. Once you have the symptoms
it will be likely that you may get them again. You will need to continue to use the shampoos that have the medication in them and take the necessary measures in order to prevent the problem from coming back.

In addition
make sure that you have an adequate supply of essential vitamins and supplements. As always
a healthy diet helps. Adopt good hair care tips to prevent more hair loss.

If you are having a difficult time from preventing this problem
then you can consult a health care provider about possible treatments. Having an understanding seborrheic dermatitis and knowing how to treat the problem will help you in maintaining a healthy scalp and hair.

Hair Loss Prevention - Save your Hair Now

Men
do you like to style your hair everyday? Do you use gels and creams and waxes to make it sleek and cool?

Women
do you use hairdryers or curling irons daily? Do you stretch your hair with braids or ponytails
and even overuse hair color?

Frequent abuse is one of the causes of hair loss. If we want to save our hair
this is the first step that we should be aware of. See if you are observing the following:

Avoid rubbing your hair too vigorously and styling your hair when it’s wet. This can cause it to stretch and break. Be careful in using permanent dyes or color on your hair. These chemicals usually cause hair damage.

Eat your vitamins! Our hair is composed of a protein called keratin. It is good to find a vitamin or food supplement that will nourish this type of protein. Also
take vitamins that have antioxidants. These fight free radicals that can damage healthy cells in our body including our hair.

Have a well-balanced diet. Eat foods that have high protein content such as Lean Meats
Peanuts and Almonds
Eggs
Legumes
Oatmeal
Whole Grain Bread and Cottage Cheese. Keeping yourself physically healthy will prevent you from taking medications that can cause hair loss.

Regular exercise and getting enough sleep naturally maintains overall health
as well as lowering stress in our lives. You may ask
are stress and hair loss related? Absolutely!

If you are currently in the middle of a problem
you may be stressed. If you are putting a very high demand of your physical and mental energy to perform higher and above your capacity
you may be stressed too. Usually
hair loss happens after the onset of a very stressful situation or event. Telogen Effluvium is the medical name given to hair loss induced stress.

When you realize that you are stressed
you must think of ways on how you can effectively manage it. One good technique is the “art of disassociation.” It is a kind of meditation you can do by imagining that the cause of your stress is moving farther and farther away from you. You can feel a sense of calmness and it will show in your face and in your actions. This is an important tool to allow your body to calm down and remove built-up stress.

Another tool to use in managing stress is to have a form of relaxation that you enjoy doing. For example
if you like reading or watching a good movie
then do these activities often to release stress. Engaging in sports is the best way that some people use to relax themselves. Pick out a fun activity that will suit you.

All of us want beautiful and healthy hair. Therefore
consciously caring for it should be a daily habit. It is better to be safe than sorry so don’t take your hair for granted! It is sometimes unfortunate that we appreciate what we have when we already lost them. Take care of your hair before it’s too late.

Hair Loss of the Bariatric or Gastric Bypass Patient

DON’T STRESS YOUR SCALP…. Avoid SOME Hair Loss!

You are most-likely aware that having Bariatric or Gastric Bypass surgery DOES cause you to experience “some” type of hair loss as you lose the weight so rapidly. You’ve heard the rumors
and they are TRUE to the point that you WILL LOSE some hair… but you will not be bald in the least! In all of my years attending a support group
NEVER have I seen one bald person yet! So rest assured that although you DO lose “some” hair
it won’t be all.

Let’s simplify this topic by putting it in a question/answer format:

Q: Why do we lose some hair?
A: As a pre-op person
you used to consume between 3
0
to 5
0
calories a day. But once you have the surgery
your caloric intake is drastically reduced to a mere 300-600 calories a day. This puts the body in an “emergency” mode as it thinks something is terribly wrong
and it begins to focus ONLY on supporting the vital organs that will sustain life. Hair has never been under the category of a “life-sustaining” organ; therefore
the body puts the hair on the back-burner until it is sure that the body is going to be okay enough to again send nutrients to the hair.

Q: When does hair loss begin?
A: It normally will begin anywhere from one month after surgery and last until about 6 months after surgery. Of course
this can begin during the third month or even extend beyond the sixth month. It varies from person to person.

Q: How much hair is lost?
A: Some will jokingly tell you that they could build a cat out of all the hair they lost
but that is not true. While you will notice some handfuls come out as you wash your hair in the shower
see more than normal in your comb or hairbrush
and perhaps even see some on your pillow when you wake up in the morning -- this is nothing to be alarmed over. IT WILL STOP FALLING OUT once the body begins to feel that life is “normal” and it will trust that it’s okay to send nutrients to the hair again. Be patient and know that it DOES STOP in time.

There ARE some TIPS that will help you NOT experience so much hair loss
however…..

DO NOT wear a hat
scarf
head bands
tight barrettes
ponytail holders or anything similar that will pull or tug on the follicles of your hair. Pulling and pushing on the hair weakens it when it is already eager to fall out. Avoid these items for at least the first six months after surgery.

DO NOT stress the hair with hot treatments such as hairdryers
curling irons
or hot rollers. Stand in front of a fan to dry your hair in a hurry and use good hair jells to create some curl if you want. Sprays are okay too. Even hair color is okay IF you do it sparingly rather than the standard automatic every 6 weeks. Try to go 8 weeks in between hair coloring. Perms are a bit more stressful
though some have had success doing them. You’ll have to judge this for yourself as you evaluate this for yourself. You can always be confident in asking your hairdresser about it if you are not sure.

DO TRY a new hair style. As heavy people
we often relied on our hair’s BEST looks to draw attention away from our extra pounds. But as you are losing
people aren’t noticing your hair anymore… they are noticing the pounds falling off
which is a perfect time for you to consider totally changing your hair style IF it will help you manage it better and also keep more of it on your head. Long hair is a heaviness on the head
which does stress and pull at the hair follicles. So perhaps a shorter style would help your delicate hair stay ON the head. Just as your body is experiencing a “makeover”
why not consider your hairstyle as well…. Especially if it will help you KEEP more hair?

DO TRY a product called NIOXIN that you can purchase from your beauty salon. It’s a three-step process of a product that helps cancer patients keep more of their hair as it falls out. It strengthens the follicles. I personally used this product
and I fully believe it helped more of my hair stay attached than what might have happened had I not used it. I noticed a remarkable difference when I used this product. And I can tell you that others also have similar testimonials on this product.

DO TRY to remember that your hair is only falling out temporarily and it will soon STOP and STAY ON again! Some people have experienced that their hair soon becomes healthier than they’ve ever had before! Sometimes the texture even changes…. Sounds FUN
huh? It can be!

BOTTOM LINE: Have a GOOD ATTITUDE about your hair… take care of it
baby it
and you’ll find that you’ll be out of that FALLING OUT Zone shortly! Today’s hairstyles ARE more relaxed
and with the right cut
you’ll look just as glamorous as a celebrity! Don’t despair…. Just know that we’re NOT a group of baldies!!!

Hair Loss Myths

Not surprisingly
hair loss myths are more well known than hair loss facts. Since hair loss is such a common and unwelcome condition
the public has been flooded with hair loss myths to promote sales of hair loss prevention products. Many companies have jumped on the hair loss bandwagon because of our own enormous desires to eliminate hair loss from our lives
not to mention the unlimited amount of money that we (the public) are willing to spend on this quest. This makes the hair loss market ripe for perpetuating myths that will increase sales. But
for the most part
they are just that
myths.

Some of the more common hair loss myths are as follows: Male Pattern Baldness comes from the mother’s side of the family and skips a generation. Not true. There is no one single gene that causes baldness. Most researches believe that MPB is a result of several different genes
inherited from both parents
interacting with each other to cause hair loss.

Hair loss myth #2: Pattern baldness affects only men. Just ask any women suffering from pattern baldness
it’s not true. In fact
hair loss is just as common in women as it is in men
it just usually occurs in a less virulent form and is easier to hide. Also
women’s hair tends to thin out over the entire scalp area
whereas men’s hair thins in patches and at the forehead.

Hair loss myth #3: Poor blood flow to the scalp area causes hair loss. This is a misconception that has been perpetuated by companies selling hair loss products for years. Ask any dermatologist and they will tell you
bald scalps have just as much blood flow as scalps full of hair. It is because of this blood flow to the bald scalp that hair transplants work so well.

Hair loss myth #4: If you haven’t lost your hair by 40
you aren’t going to. Again
not true. Age has nothing to do with it. If you are genetically predisposed to loose your hair
you are going to. Just be grateful you made it to 40 with your hair still intact.

Hair loss myth #5: Stress makes your hair fall out. Okay
in some part
this is true
but it takes a very traumatic event to cause enough stress that your hair falls out. The common stress we experience on a daily basis will not make our hair fall out. In fact
some stress can actually increase the production of hair.

Okay
I could go on and on about hair loss myths and not run out of things to talk about. My point is this. Most of the facts we think we know about hair loss are actually hair loss myths. If you are suffering from hair loss
consult your doctor. Your physician will be able to give you a factual reason for your hair loss and advise you on what types of treatments would work in your specific case.

Hair Loss- Let Us Discuss The Reasons

Thursday, 3 September 2009

Why should perfectly good hair begin falling down? When they do begin falling
we worry endlessly and try to find remedies. What are the reasons for hair fall? Let us try and find out as many of them as we can and find out how to stop that.

Hair loss - some reasons

The main reason other than genetic or a disorder is mishandling of hair. When we have good hair
we want to experiment with that. We get it colored. Go for perming. Get other heat and chemical treatments done to look good. Every treatment that changes hair does it by hurting the cuticle. After many treatments the cuticle cannot take it and breaks down. The cortex (inner part of hair) also fails and hair breaks. If the chemicals reach the pore and destroy the follicle growth there
you lose the hair.

Chemotherapy in cancer makes one loose hair. That is temporary and because of the therapy. After sometime the hair grows back. Some medicines cause hair loss. If you are on medication and are suffering hair loss
please ask your doctor about possible connection. Diet is another reason. Low iron or proteins may cause hair loss. Women lose hair after pregnancy but get them back. Unless you are suffering from alopecia aerta or genetic hair loss
you can easily find out the reason and rectify that. Please talk to your doctor about any supplements that can help you have healthy hair. Also discuss possible reasons specific to you for your hair loss.

Hair Loss In Women

Causes Of Hair Loss In Women

In the past few decades
hair loss in women has become a growing problem. More and more women are complaining of thinning hair. There are a number of reasons for this hair loss. Most often it is because of a hormonal imbalance
other times
hair loss is an after effect of surgery or pregnancy.

Taking specific medications such as the birth control pill
blood thinners
or anti fungal medication can also cause hair loss in women. Women who have had chemotherapy treatment have also experienced hair loss. And these are just a few of the many causes out there.

Diseases and Hair Loss In Women

There are also certain diseases that can cause hair loss in men and women. One of the warning signs of diabetes is hair loss for example. Specific tests need to be done to rule this or any other disease out as a cause of hair loss before you take any further action.

When Is Hair Loss In Women Normal?

At any given point in time
hair experts predict that about seven to ten percent of a woman's hair is in a resting period. This resting period can last approximate two to three months. When the resting period is done
the hair falls out. New hair immediately starts to grow back
and could take up to 6 years to grow out.

Hair expert theorize that approximately ninety percent of all hair is growing at one time. It is the normal to experience hair loss on a daily basis.

Treat Your Hair With Care

The way hair is treated can affect hair loss. When hair is always tied back
either in pigtails or ponytails
it can cause a condition called Alopecia. This condition results in scarring on the scalp and new hair growth is prohibited.
Often
women will have their hair permed or colored
to make it look better
but this can damage the hair beyond repair and actually cause Alopecia as well.

Can Doctor Help With Hair Loss In Women?

A medical doctor may be of assistance in the diagnosis of hair loss in women. A doctor will perform an exam and ask a series of questions to help with the diagnosis. It is important to answer all questions honestly. If it is needed
a biopsy will be ordered to rule out any type of cancer.

Treatment Options For Hair Loss In Women

There are treatment options for hair loss. It can be very simple. If the hair loss is due to medication
then a different medication can be prescribed. If the hair loss is due to infection or hormones
again medication can be prescribed.

In the past decade
hair loss drugs such as Rogaine have been developed for hair loss for women. This medicine can be found in over the counter pharmacies everywhere.

There are special doctors who can offer hair transplants to women
however
it is quite expensive
and virtually all insurance companies deem this elective cosmetic surgery and do not cover it.

When All Else Fails

When all else fails
there are specialty shops that offer custom made wigs
weaves
and hairpieces to accommodate any woman who wishes to have luxurious hair.

Every hair follicle has life cycle of between two and six years, which ends with the hair falling and a new one replacing it. 90% of the hair is at the growing stage, ANAGEN, at this stage the hair grows about 0.3 mm everyday and it last three years. The next stage is resting, KATAGEN, at this stage the hair does not grow and stay static for three weeks. The last stage takes place when the hair falls, TELOGEN, it can take up to three months to the hair to fall. Normally, at this stage new hair is growing.

The average person loses between 50 to 100 hairs daily. The hair grows about one CM a month. Blond people have more hairs, about 140,000, in compare to darker hair people who have 90,000. Old people tend to lose more hairs then growing them back.

Hair loss is usually diagnostic when large areas of the scalp are left with only thin hair. Usually people notice hair loss when they comb, or at the shower. The hair loss results from the pressure on the hairs during these activities, and not necessarily indicates that you have hair loss problem. One way to test if we are losing our hair is to pull your hair if you end up with more than 4-5 hairs in your hand you might have a problem. Another test is counting the hairs on your pillow in the morning. More than 8 hairs are indication to serious hair loss.

Women and men lose hair differently. Among men hair loss is usually related to hormones and genetics. It is a hereditary phenomenon which could jump over generations. While women, suffer from a larger variety of reasons. Hereditary is the main reason, as with men, and more reasons like: cold weather, high fever diseases, infective diseases, lack of protein, depression, high cholesterol, and more.

Hairs on the pillow are usually a result of hereditary, typical men oriented. Another symptom, is losing hair from the forehead, AGA, the hair becomes downy and thin until it completely falls off. According to popular estimations about 70% of men suffer from boldness by the age of fifty. About 25% of women under forty suffer from hair loss, and 50% over fifty suffer from thin hair look.

Now you probably say: OK we need help, where can we get it? Look for natural solutions. Keep looking until you find the best one for you. Do not stop looking for you will find a good solution eventually.

Hair Loss Caused By Lichen Planus

There are several factors that can result in hair loss. One common disease is a disorder known as lichen planus. This particular disease is not in itself a direct cause but it is an important trigger and often causes complications with the scalp and can lead to this problem.

Lichen planus is more of a skin disorder that also affects other areas of the body. Thus, it can not only affect the skin and body, but also the scalp. When the scalp is affected, hair loss is experienced. Licen phanus is usually considered to be an allergic reaction and is often associated with a poor immune system. Some believe that lichen planus is triggered from excessive stress. Stress weakens the body’s immune system and render it susceptible to infection and other health symptoms such as hair loss. The chances of getting another lichen planus attack rise with the first affliction, even with treatment and prevention measures.

Lichen planus is most identifiable by the changes in the skin that occur. There will be itching in certain areas of the skin, as well as skin lesions that will appear in a variety of places. The skin lesions will have a variety of attributes related to their shape, size and color, all which will help you in identifying the disorder. There may also be nail abnormalities, such as ridges in the nails that begin to appear. The skin lesions will then begin to move into the mouth area and cause your mouth to feel dry. From here, lichen planus will begin to show on the scalp area and hair will be lost from the irritation from the scalp area.

Once you notice these symptoms, do not wait too long to treat the lichen planus. In most cases, the symptoms are not severe enough and will simply go away over time. However, there is also the possibility of the symptoms become full blown and it will be more difficult to treat at that point in time.

For treatment, you can take prescribed medications. Antihistamines are useful in helping to treat lichen planus. Vitamin A in the form of ointments and creams are also considered to be effective. It can be expected that this disorder will disappear after a few months or after a longer amount of time. Also, ensure a healthy diet and lifestyle to boost your immune system.

If you notice both the above mentioned symptoms and also experience hair loss at the same time, then it is possible that you can be having lichen planus. To be absolutely sure, it is best to seek a professional diagnosis. Lichen planus can cause much discomfort to you as it affects your physical appearance. Understanding what the symptoms of lichen planus are and knowing what to do will help you repair your skin and treat yourself from hair loss.

Hair Loss Due To Various Diseases Or Surgery

Most times, hair loss is explained in the context of genetics and a change in the hormonal balance of one’s body. However, hair loss can also be a symptom of an underlying disease or a result from a surgery.

Skin diseases that affect the scalp form one disorder that can result in hair loss. The nutrients, minerals and supplements are lost rapidly in the hair and scalp. With any of these skin diseases, it will usually cause hair loss either because of the effects from the immune system or because of the lack of nutrients that are not available from the disease.

Cancer, lupus or diabetes are other conditions that can cause your hair to fall out. Because the nutrients are not balanced in the body from these diseases, it may cause side effects or problems with hair loss. This is known as a side effect of an underlying problem that is more severe.

When you are losing hair from a surgery, it is usually either a side effect of the disease, or from excess stress that occurs from the surgery. This is especially known to be a problem if the surgery is major. In other instances, the hair loss may be a result of part of the surgical procedure, such as chemotherapy, which will cause temporary hair loss.

Knowing how your disease or the aftermath of a surgery can result in hair loss is important as it can mean that your falling hair may just be a temporary situation as you recover from a weakened immune system and body.

Once your body hormones begin to balance again and your organs are working optimally, hair will begin to grow back at a normal rate. Don’t worry excessively if your hair takes some time to grow. It takes time for the proteins and nutrients to take effect on your scalp and hair. In fact, a period of between four to six months is usually the case before you have a good amount of hair back on your head again.

If you are losing your hair because of a disease, then you can expect that the hair will grow back. In order to make sure that your hair grows back, you will need to take proper specific steps in order to remove toxins from your body and rebalance the hormones internally. In effect, your scalp and hair area will gain more nutrients and will have the ability to become healthy again. Over time, your hair loss will diminish and will grow back, despite the effects from any type of disease that has affected your body.

Hair Loss Gets In The Way Of Having Picture-Perfect Tresses

Much has been said about hair being a person's crowning glory. You've probably noticed how every single shampoo and conditioner commercial emphasizes (and most of the time, over-emphasizes) the need to have long and silky tresses (for the women) and healthy and fuzz-free hair (for the gentlemen). In the metro, there's also a burgeoning of parlors and salons offering a variety of hair care services to cater to the hair whims of every customer. But the reality is that, not everyone is blessed with picture-perfect mane. Men and women have to deal with hair woes such as dry and oily hair, dandruff, split ends, and hair loss. Since premature loss of hair is hereditary, some people have to face the brutal fact that they would be bald sooner, not later, than they expect. It's an amazing thing to know that several kinds of hair loss treatment are now up for grabs in the market.

According to experts in the field of hair care, women should note that men are not the only ones who have the tendency to experience and suffer hair loss condition. It only seems men are more prone to having partial or complete balding but this doesn't mean women are safe. If a person is starting to notice excessive hair fall and bald spots, he or she should immediately consult his or her doctor. Although a person doesn't have any history of premature loss of hair in the family, he or she can get bald as a side effect of a particular drug. Aside from medication and genes, one can experience premature loss of hair because of an existing disease or illness such as cancer.

Nowadays, hair loss treatments may come in the form of pomade or surgical enhancement. He or she can choose among different brands or methods according to his or her budget and preference.

How do surgical or non-surgical treatments actually fight a person's biological tendency to lose excessive amount or hair? Manufacturers behind most kinds of hair loss treatment like growth stimulators, super oxide dismutase and anti-antrogens explain that these services or products generally stimulate hair follicles to ensure production of healthier and stronger hair strands. But the more effective treatment is DHT inhibitors which prevent 5-Alpha Reductase and testosterone from teaming up and thus, resulting in noticeably less hair fall. Though hair loss is an inevitable reality for some, one can do something to prevent and fight it.

Hair Loss- Are You Suffering From Alopecia Aerata

Tuesday, 18 August 2009

Hair loss is a common problem. But most of the people who suffer hair loss never understand why their hair is falling. It is a mystery for most of us. Because of not understanding
we try many therapies including different diets and natural formulations. But most of the times
we find no improvement. That is very disappointing and we accept the fact of hair loss and stop trying. This need not be done. Once we understand all the possible reasons of hair loss
we can surely find out what is happening to us and take an informed decision. Alopecia aerata is one of common causes of hair loss. Let us find out about that.

Hair loss- what is alopecia aerata?

Alopecia aerata is an autoimmune disease. In this disease the body attacks the hair follicles and kills them. The body begins to think that hair follicles are foreign objects and wants to remove them. Why it does that is a mystery.

Hair loss pattern in alopecia aerata

You may begin losing hair in coin size patches. Sometimes the loss will stop after a patch or two and re-grow there after some months. Sometimes the loss continues and you may lose all the hair. This hair may come back after some months. No body can predict about how you will lose hair and when you will get it again. If you have a family member who suffers from a autoimmune disease such as Atopic dermatitis
hay fever etc. your probability of getting alopecia aerata increases. There is no way to stop this hair loss. Only treatment can be done to get the hair back sooner.

Hair Loss and Supplements

Copyright 2006 Mary Desaulniers

It wasn't until his mid-fifties that my father started losing his hair. I remember the boxes of lotions
creams
heating massage pads that kept coming to his house (much to my stepmother's chagrin). But his hairline kept receding and a decade later
only a well-greased tuft remained on the crown of his head.

Genetics had a lot to do with his situation. My older brother
almost 60 now
is showing the same pattern of thinning hair. But
unlike my father
he has a lot more treatment options at his disposal.

Causes for hair loss can run the gamut from genetics
medical treatments like chemotherapy
skin eczema or allergies
excessive stress
poor nutrition
hormonal changes like menopause and "andropause"
under-active thyroid
immune disorders to trichotillomania
a psychological disorder in which people are compelled to pull out their hair. A study in England has also shown a direct connection between smoking and hair loss. It also showed that smokers were 4 times more likely to have gray hair than non-smokers.

Some conditions can be treated medically through drugs like minoxidil and corticosteroids. Others might require something more drastic
like follicular hair transplant
a form of surgical hair restoration that does provide lasting benefits. The cost
however
can be prohibitive.

But for us normal folks in our 30's
40
even 50's
who are just starting to notice our thinning hair
what preventative measures or supplementation can we take to minimize hair loss?

Because healthy hair is dependent on the health of the scalp (hair requires a plentiful supply of nutrient-rich blood to nourish the hair follicles in the scalp) it makes sense that eating nutritionally balanced meals will promote healthy follicles and healthy hair growth. In a recent interview
Dr. Shari Lieberman Ph.D CNS
a nutrition scientist and exercise physiologist at the University of Bridgeport
CT
claims that crash diets have been responsible for many cases of hair loss: "I'm seeing a lot of women not eating enough protein. A lot of them are eating vegetables; they're eating carbs. They've really gone off a lot of protein and sometimes I'll see hair loss in women for that."

There is no doubt that a daily diet rich in protein
good carbs and essential fats is important for hair health. Hair is very sensitive to vitamin or mineral imbalances in the body. A flaky scalp can be caused by too little vitamin A; however
too much vitamin A can also bring about hair loss. Supplements
when taken on a consistent basis
at the average or standard dosage suggested below or at a dosage recommended by your physician
can be a strong deterrent to premature hair loss. Consider the following:

a) Evening Primrose Oil and Flaxseed Oil. Both of these are rich in omega-3 fatty acids which are essential for strong
healthy hair. Evening primrose oil contains a special fat called gamma-linolenic acid( GLA) which the body converts to hormonelike compounds called prostaglandins. The GLA in evening primrose oil is directly converted to anti-inflammatory prostaglandins which are effective against eczema and skin allergies. Taking evening primrose oil (1000mg 3 times a day) will prevent hair loss that is caused by excess flaking and shedding of skin on the scalp.

b) Flaxseed Oil (14 g a day) provides substances called lignans which may help fight cancer
bacteria
viruses and fungi. Flaxseed oil boosts the health of hair and nail and speeds the healing of scalp lesions that may contribute to hair loss. A recent study involving 10 men between the ages of 20 and 70 in varying stages of male pattern baldness ( AGA) showed that 8 of the subjects reported modest improvement of their hair loss condition
one reported much improvement and one subject reported no effect. Throughout the study
the daily numbers of hair loss decreased and 50 percent of the subjects noticed a decrease in oil secretion in their scalp.

c) Zinc (30mg) can boost thyroid function and reduce hair loss that comes from an underactive thyroid. Zinc must be taken with its companion Copper (2 mg a day) in order to maintain proper mineral balance in the body. Copper also contains melanin
the pigment that colors hair and skin and can help reverse or delay premature graying. Zinc can also affect the levels of androgens
the hormones involved in some form of genetic hair loss.

d) Biotin (1000 mcg a day) and Vitamin B-50 Complex (1 tablet twice a day) can also reduce the oiliness and flakiness of the scalp and strengthen the condition of the hair.

Other preventative procedures could include a weekly scalp massage to stimulate blood flow and reduce stress which can contribute to hair loss
wearing a hat to protect hair and scalp from sun damage and avoiding abrasive hair treatment like permanents or coloring.

Hair Loss - Tips for Success

Billions of dollars will be spent on hair loss solutions this year. Much of this money will go to waste. Ineffective products and misleading advertising are only partially to blame. Many consumers are not using these hair loss products in an effective way. Fortunately there are a few simple ways that consumers can increase their chance of success. Following these guidelines will ensure that your money does not go to waste:

Start a Journal

People usually try several different hair loss products before they find something that works for them. Many use two or more products simultaneously. Keeping track of all this information can be frustrating and difficult. The best way to figure out what is working is to keep a journal detailing your progress. You should record all relevant information about the treatment process: when you started
the dosage
cost
and any side effects you experience. This documentation will tell you which products are effective
which ones are not
and allow you to make changes as you see fit.

Take Pictures

Noticing small changes in your hairline over time is extremely difficult. Taking pictures on a regular basis is the most effective ways to track your progress. Always photograph your head from the same angle
in similar lighting conditions. Use a digital camera for best results
most will automatically record the date and time for you. When combined with a treatment journal
these photos provide an invaluable tool that will allow you to judge the effectiveness of products you use.

Do Your Homework

The Internet is flooded with products claiming to cure and treat hair loss. Finding out which ones are legitimate can be a difficult task. When researching products online
beware of those that sound too good to be true. If the company has before and after pictures
examine them closely. If the images were shot from different angles
or in different lighting
be suspicious. These techniques are common camera tricks used to fool the eye
and the consumer. When a company claims their product has a "98% success rate"
look for documentation of their clinical study. If the clinical information they provide is vague
or even missing altogether
be wary.

If you follow these steps during your treatment
your chances of success are excellent. One last tip - any successful regimen requires dedication. Whatever the treatment is
carefully follow the instructions from your doctor or the product manufacturer.

Hair Loss The Causes and Misconception of Male Pattern Baldness

There are roughly 80 million men and women in the world suffering from hair loss. In humans
it is caused by a number of different factors. Male pattern baldness is the most common form of hair loss and is estimated to affect 90 percent of men by age 50. That said
pattern baldness (or natural hair loss) isn’t specific to men; women suffer from female pattern baldness as well.

WHY PEOPLE LOSE THEIR HAIR
Male pattern baldness (clinically known as androgenetic alopecia) is the most common reason for hair loss. It’s related to Dihydrotestosterone (DHT)
a naturally occurring hormone present in all men. DHT has a detrimental affect on the hair follicles. It slows down hair production and causes new hairs to be shorter and weaker than usual. The hormone can even completely stop hair growth
gradually depleting your stock of hair. There are a number of other reasons why people go bald
including other forms of alopecia
the treatment of terminal illnesses and diet
just to name a few. Surgical hair loss treatments like Bosley are most commonly used to regrow hair loss caused by male pattern baldness.

MISCONCEPTIONS ABOUT HAIR LOSS
By default
men typically blame mom for hair loss
as it was widely understood that hair loss is simply inherited from their mother’s side. This is just one of a number of common hair loss misconceptions:

- Hair loss is inherited from your mother’s father — Not true. Baldness is inherited
but from both your mother's and father's genes.
- Hair loss slows and eventually stops as you age — Not true. Hair loss is a progressive trait that doesn't stop; in fact
it gets worse with age.
- Hats or helmets can cause hair loss — Not true. Wearing something on your head has no effect on hair loss. Although hairpieces and weaves that pull and strain your hair may cause traction alopecia.
- Brushing or massaging the scalp reduces hair loss — There isn't sufficient evidence to conclude that brushing or massaging the scalp prevents or reduces hair loss.
- Too much sun causes hair loss — Not true. Though excessive sun exposure is damaging to your hair
there isn’t evidence to conclude that it causes permanent hair loss.
HAIR LOSS TREATMENT
As previously stated
there are various hair loss treatments
which have been proven to stop hair loss
and in some cases even regrow lost hair. Of the non-surgical hair treatments
Propecia and Minoxidil seem to be effective with a significant number of people. New
alternative methods of laser treatments have also been developed. First
there was the LaserComb
which employs low-level laser light technology to coerce hair follicles to regenerate. The handheld device requires people to spend 20 minutes a day running the comb through their hair. Recently
the technology has been further developed
evolving into a more effective
less intensive treatment. In the new laser treatment
a laser light helmet is used to aim high concentrations of laser light at affected areas of the scalp.

If you
however
have already experienced significant male pattern baldness and are looking to naturally and permanently cover your bald spot
then hair restoration surgery might be your best bet.

HAIR RESTORATION
Over the past century
hair restoration has become one of the most popular cosmetic surgeries among men and women alike. There’s a plethora of hair restoration surgeons in the United States
many of which provide their patients with stellar results.

Hair restoration surgery involves transplanting hair follicles from the donor areas of the head—typically the back and sides—to the bald or thinning areas. These are called grafts. Each graft can contain between 1 to 4 hairs. Because the donor hairs are from areas of the head that are not prone to balding
they are considered permanent when transplanted to balding areas
such as the scalp. The result is often a permanent
natural looking head of hair.

BattleAgainstBald.com follows real hair restoration patients as they restore their natural hairlines with Bosley procedures. Torrance and Seth are the Battle Against Bald’s Bosley patients and in addition to their weekly entries detailing the updates of their Bosley procedures
the blog provides a wealth of comprehensive information on hair loss
its causes and the methods used to combat it.

It has been nine months since Seth’s Bosley hair restoration and it’s official
he has more hair. Seth wanted to improve the appearance of his hair and restore a more youthful hairline
which he was able to achieve through just one Bosley procedure. Most hair restoration patients don’t start to see results until 3-5 months after the procedure. It has been four months since Torrance’s Bosley procedure and he’s beginning to see signs of hair after years of male pattern baldness.
Battle Against Bald is a blog that is sponsored by Bosley that speaks to those who are struggling with hair loss and are interested in hair restoration.

Hair Loss Stress Triggers

It is not surprising that one of the major factors leading to hair loss stems from stress. Extreme stress can affect several aspects of one’s life and health
including causing hair If you suspect that stress is triggering your hair loss
then you will have to make changes in your lifestyle; otherwise you may well end up with bald patches on your head.

Stress can be triggered externally or internally. External situations come from the environment. Internal factors are linked to emotional responses such as depression
grief or resistance to change. If this stress is continuous and is not solved
it will begin to affect the way in which the body reacts.

Hair loss will often result as a reaction to the way in which stress impacts the balance in your body. When stress begins to take place in your body
the hormonal balance in your body is upset. There may be an excess production of hormones which may then go into the scalp area and causing your hair to fall out. Usually
this hair loss will be noticeable after two to four months. You will be able to identify the hair loss by the thinning of your hair
bald spots or more hair falling out than usual.

To manage stress
you can use a variety of relaxation ways. Meditation techniques can be used to help you let go of daily problems. Massage therapy and going on a vacation are other ideas that you can adopt. You can also work on changing dietary habits and exercising regularly. If the problems are more external or related to a life-changing situation
there are a variety of places that will help you in working through the problem.

Hair loss due to stress triggers can be stopped pretty easily and quickly once you control your stress and ease the pressures that you face. Take comfort that hair loss is usually not permanent in these cases and hair tends to grow back after stress is reduced. When you eliminate stress
the hormonal balance in your body is restored and production of particular nutrients is back at normal levels. In conclusion
it is important to get help and support quickly before hair is not lost completely.

Hair Loss Don t Rule Out a Thyroid Condition

If you suffer from hair loss you might want to make sure that your problem is not caused by a thyroid condition. Although the usual reasons for hair loss are genetic predetermination
hormonal changes
or certain cancer treatments
thyroid hair loss should also be considered.

There are three types of hair loss; thyroid hair loss
autoimmune alopecia
and male pattern hair loss. Thyroid hair loss can manifest in both hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism. In those with thyroid hair loss
there will be a general thinning of the hair
without the bald patches characteristic of male pattern baldness.

Symptoms of hypothyroidism include fatigue
dry skin
abnormal sensitivity to cold
constipation and depression. If you one or more of these symptoms along with loss of hair
think about getting tested for thyroid problems.

Synthroid is commonly prescribed in hypothyroidism; this medication is effective however
it can produce thyroid hair loss as a side effect for some people. Your hair loss may be due to Synthroid
so speak to your doctor about the possibility. Thyroid hair loss can also occur if you are under-treated. A Thyroid Stimulating Hormone level of around 1-2 is optimal for a large number of people who are suffering from hypothyroidism with no hair falling.

Evening primrose oil supplements are one alternative therapy that some have found to be useful in alleviating thyroid hair loss. Aromatherapy is another which is reported to be effective. Essential oils of thyme
cedar wood oil
lavender
and rosemary can be blended and applied to the scalp to help encourage hair growth.

Ayurveda medicines such as Bhingaraj oil or brahmi oil have also been used to treat hair loss due to thyroid conditions. Both these oils applied to the scalp continuously for at least 3 months are said to aid hair growth. Growth of hair will also be aided by supplementation with the ayurvedic herbs amla and ashwagandha.

The ultimate remedy for thyroid hair loss is hair transplantation. Tiny hair plugs are removed from the scalp’s back or side and then implanted to bald portions of the scalp. Results can be seen after several months. This procedure is expensive and is not always covered by insurance providers
but can be worth every penny for those suffering from this discouraging condition.

Hair Loss Biotin is Food for Your Hair

Sunday, 16 August 2009

Biotin plays a significant part in the prevention of hair loss. Most nutritionists agree that biotin is one of the important vitamins for supporting hair growth. It is also commonly advised to take biotin to supplement medical treatments such Minoxidil or Propecia.

A deficiency of biotin may cause hair to become frail and unhealthy
and hair breakage
which may result in hair loss. Biotin also keeps your skin and nails healthy as well as being an important element of new hair growth.
Supplements are sometimes needed to return biotin levels to normal
but it is recommended to include biotin regularly in your diet. Two foods containing good quantities of biotin are liver and egg yolks. You would have to eat thousands of calories worth daily to get enough for your hair needs
which is why I would also suggest biotin supplements.

Foods full of biotin include brewer's yeast
green peas
oats
soybeans
walnuts
sunflower seeds
green peas
bulgur and brown rice. In terms of the egg yolks
your body's ability to digest and assimilate biotin decreases with high intake levels of protein. Biotin binds easily to proteins
making it unavailable to your body
which in turn causes biotin deficiency and hair loss. Try to steer clear of raw eggs in your diet
and cut down on protein powders and bars. Use one of the many shampoos that contain biotin and silica.

Additionally
those with type A blood don't have the ability to fully absorb B vitamins. Biotin is classified as a Vitamin B
so if you have Type A blood
adding higher doses of 5-8 grams twice daily will be needed to help prevent hair loss. At this time
there are no known side effects at this dosage level.

People suffering from heartburn
acid reflux
or GERD and who are taking antacids may absorb biotin less and hair loss may occur as a result. Therefore watch your use of over-the-counter antacids if you are worried about hair loss.

Hair Loss

To all bald-headed men.

When you drive at night do you have to turn your head down to low beam?

Yes
there are many such thoughtless jokes about baldness
in both males and females. However
loss of head hair really is a problem
which causes a great deal of worry and unhappiness
to those afflicted.

Hopefully
there may be some help and answers for you
within this web site. It is often easier to reduce the ageing and thinning of healthy hair
than to regrow into follicles that are already dormant.

Reversing and preventing further hair loss may also be possible. Some products and techniques could be:

Topical ketokonazole
an anti-fungal/5-alfa inhibitor of reductase.
Finasteride and/or minoxidel
known in the United States as propecia and Rogaine
or Rogeine
respectively.
Placebos have average results
but not usually as high as other specific products
Hair cloning
or multiplication
using self replenishing follicle stem cells.
Hair transplants have been used for many years.
To lower androgen levels
aerobic exercises may be beneficial. This may also help stress reduction which can be an aid to slow the loss of hair.
Senanoa repens/saw palmetto
a DHT inhibit talk and a herb. Fewer side-effects and less expensive than products such as dutasteride
or finesteride.
Resveratrol is a lipase inhibitorl
made from grape skins.
Chinese herbs and Chinese medicine may be tried. Seek help from qualified acupuncturists
herbalists and holistic medicine practitioners.
Beta Sitosterol
found in oils of seeds
may also help by lowering cholesterol. Use an extract
as the heavy consumption of oils can aggravate the hairloss problem.

As we all know
baldness in males
is more common than females – thank goodness!

Baldness can be caused by a number of factors
including the trigger
an enzyme called 5-alfa reductase
which converts testosterone into dihydrotestosterone - DHT
which can inhibit growth in genetically fine hairs. Some female baldness may be a result of an oestrogen reduction. Oestrogen usually counteracts testosterones balding action. Tight ponytails and corn rows
could also contribute to female hair loss
as may constantly wearing a hat.

This short article can
in no way
cover the wide spectrum of causes and treatments for hair loss. Search the internet through search engines such as Google
etc and seek help from alternative health practitioners
as well as traditional western medicine.

Hair diseases resulting into hair loss

Saturday, 15 August 2009

Hair diseases and hair loss are interrelated. One cannot be thought about without the other.

Common hair loss causes
No single factor can be marked out as the universal cause of hair diseases. There are several causes varying from person to person.

The two types of hair loss diseases
The hair loss causes can be broadly divided into the following two groups –

The temporary effect and the one involving a prolonged action
usually triggered by genetics.

a.) The temporary effect – Usually such cases can be cured by medications and treatments.
b.) Prolonged hair loss diseases – Such cases may require long term treatment. Sometimes the drug treatment might appear to be ineffective. In such circumstances surgery like hair transplantation may be the way.

The causes of temporary hair loss include the ones like child birth
using birth control pills
etc.
Another key factor can be hormonal imbalance. It can have a severe impact by causing pattern baldness. The latter comes in the list of major hair diseases.

Relation between hair diseases and hair loss
It is sometimes found that a particular hair loss cause is more commonly related to a particular hair disease. In this context one can refer to the acquired hair shaft defects. These defects are usually triggered by the excessive use of hair treatments and styling products.

Similarly
infectious diseases have their root in unhygienic scalp.

The common causes of hair loss diseases –

The common causes of hair loss diseases include the following –
• Hormonal imbalance
• Ailment
• Faulty hair styling
• Inadequate diet
Hormonal Imbalance
In men – Hormonal imbalance is a major cause of hair loss diseases among men. The male hormone testosterone plays a key role in actuating hair loss. The enzyme 5 alpha reductase in the hair follicles turns testosterone into dihydrotestosterone (DHT). The latter is the most potent androgen promoting male pattern baldness
the common hair loss disease.

In women – Imbalance in thyroid hormone is a key cause of sudden hair loss among women. The thyroid gland’s being n the state of overactive and under active might cause hair fall. Thyroid hormones largely influence cellular metabolism of scalp proteins
carbohydrates
lipids and minerals. And the hair matrix cells are highly affected by the thyroid hormones’ excess or deficiency.

Hormonal imbalance also causes hair loss during pregnancy. Pregnancy witnesses a high level of estrogen hormones. This causes hair follicles percentage in anagen growth phase. But post-child birth there is a rapid fall in the estrogen level. Consequently a large number of hair follicles shift to a catagen phase. And gradually hair falls.

Women may also experience hair loss during post-pregnancy period. It is generally temporary in nature. But if it continues for months
then it may indicate hormonal imbalance in the body. And hormonal imbalance for an extended period requires proper treatment.

Ailment
Some of the serous ailments like high fever
severe infection
or flu may lead hair follicles to a resting phase. This condition called telogen effluvium results increased hair fall. But it is a temporary condition soon to be followed by normalcy.

Some cancer treatments also prevent the hair fiber growth. The hair becomes thin and breaks off. And gradually hair loss occurs. The condition starts within one to three weeks after the beginning of the chemotherapy treatment. The treatment may witness the patients losing up to 90 percent of their scalp hair.

Faulty hair styling

It means using certain hair styling techniques resulting in hair loss diseases like traction alopecia. In this condition the hair fibers are pulled out from the hair follicle by a hairstyle that pulls on the roots of the hair fibers. One example of such faulty hair styling is braiding cornrowing.

Cosmetic treatments like bleaching
coloring or hair straightening like chemical relaxing can also create problems if proper procedure is not followed.
Inadequate diet
Taking up crash diets for rapid weight loss may lead to hair loss. Such diets are low in protein
vitamins and minerals
thus causing malnutrition. Abnormal eating habits lacking important nutrients can also result into hair loss.

Hair analysis test for diagnosis

The decision of when to perform a laboratory evaluation or a hair analysis test in women experiencing hair loss should be made on an individual basis by the hair restoration specialist. In this article we briefly describe some of the situations where a hair restoration doctor may order lab tests. It is important to note that this is just an overview for your general information so you can understand the reason and the result if you are asked for hair analysis or laboratory tests.

When a hair loss specialist or physician orders some laboratory tests
these hair analysis tests are ordered only after specific clinical information or after observing and carefully evaluating your hair loss. Understanding the basis of these hair analysis tests helps you to understand the cause of your hair loss and also helps you to make an informed decision for a particular hair loss treatment.

While hair loss directly due to a deficiency in a nutrient is believed to be rare
a large industry has developed in recent years based on nutrient "hair analysis". Several clinics and laboratories claim to be able to define a deficiency of a nutrient or vitamin through analyzing a sample of your hair. The Internet enables these clinics and laboratories to advertise worldwide and a quick search should provide you with numerous web sites offering hair analysis.

These investigations have a simple yes - no question
is the drug
toxin
or heavy metal there or not? There is also the advantage that most of the metals and toxins looked for have a fairly stable chemical nature. They are un-reactive compared to nutrients so they are less likely to change with exposure to the environment. With nutrient analysis the laboratory is attempting to define shades of gray - exactly how much of the nutrient is there? This has been shown to be virtually impossible to do. Even sending hair samples from the same donor to different analysis labs yields contrasting results.
Each vitamin and most minerals are present in blood in extremely small concentrations. Blood also contains a great number of chemicals and molecules and many of these tend to interfere with vitamin and mineral tests. For this reason
a procedure like HPLC (high pressure liquid chromatography) that separates the vitamin or mineral from contaminating substances is usually performed prior to conducting the actual test.

Following separation or purification by HPLC
the vitamin or mineral is detected by a color reaction or fluorescence reaction. In these reactions
the amount of color or fluorescence that is formed is proportional to the amount of vitamin or mineral in the sample
allowing the amount of nutrient present in the original sample to be calculated. In the case of some nutrients
the purified factor of interest is reacted with a special chemical (reagent) prior to detection.

Hair analysis helps the hair loss specialist to reach a diagnosis on hair loss. There can be several Causes of Hair Loss in Women and Hair Loss in Men and after a correct diagnosis is made
the correct women hair restoration treatment can be suggested.
This is not to say all hair analysis is invalid. Analysis of hair is a very useful method of defining exposure to heavy metals. A hair analysis can reveal whether a person has had a chronic exposure to chemical toxins in the environment. And of course hair analysis can be used to show that an individual has been using illegal drugs. The test is known as Hair Follicle Drug Testing. These forms of hair analysis are looking for the presence of a particular chemical that is not normally found in hair
or looking for expression over and above that which is known to be safe.

Hair Care Routine which is a must for Beautiful hair.

1
Shampooing

• Brush or comb hair thoroughly to loosen dirt and dead skin cells from the head. Wet the hair well so that the underneath layers as well as the top are well saturated with water.

• Pour about 1 tsp of shampoo in a little water to get a diluted solution and massage this diluted shampoo gently into the roots with your fingertips
covering the whole of the head.

• With the flat surface of your hand work that shampoo into the bulk of the hair over the top layers.

• Rinse thoroughly with water until the shampoo has been completely washed off.

• Repeat the same procedure if necessary.

2. Conditioning

• Shampoo the hair as directed above as many times as desired and wash thoroughly.

• Pour approx. 2-2 1/2 tsps of conditioner in your hair all over.

• Leave on far about 5 minutes and rinse off thoroughly until the conditioner has been completely washed off.

3. Drying

Note that wet hair loses upto 20 percent of its elasticity and with it
much of its natural resilience. So treat it as gently as you possibly can after washing :

• Squeeze out excess water
wrap hair loosely in a clean towel
turban-fashion and press firmly against the head. Do not rub vigorously.

• Once the hair is no longer soaking wet
the best thing you can do is to leave it to dry naturally.

• When using a blow dryer
capitalize on the control
minimize on the damage : (a) do not start drying until the hair is three quarters dry ; (b) do not hold the dryer over one area of the head for too long ; (c) do not allow the scalp to become hot; (d) use a brush gently to persuade the hair into the style you want; and (e) do not continue to blow dry on to hair that is already dry.

4. Brushing and combing

Always brush hair when it is dry because brushing wet hair cause the ends to split.

• Tilt your head forward while brushing as this increases the blood supply to the head and stimulates the hair.

• Never use a sharp teethed brush or it may tear the hair apart.

• Fine hair needs a softer brush while thick long hair needs a bigger brush with stiff bristles.

• For combing wet hair
use a comb in which the teeth are widely spaced.

• The best way to comb out tangles hair (knots) is to start at the ends and work upwards gradually.

Follicular grouping the innovative hair transplant technique

Experiments performed by the hair transplant surgeon Dr Seager in 1996 gave significant credence to the surgical technique of unit follicular hair transplant. Since these experiments had demonstrated that the survival rate of intact follicular unit was better than the single hair micro-grafts
the use of micro-grafts for hair transplant surgery was more or less dropped.

Although the results of surgical hair restoration with the use of follicular unit transplants were sound and aesthetically pleasing
this form of hair transplant surgery suffered from drawback of requiring a long time period (6-8 hr) to complete a transplant session. It involved teams of highly skilled assistants for the hair transplant procedure of separating the follicular units. As the procedure required long time and much skill the procedure was proving to be very costly to the patient. The surgical damage caused to the follicle when two follicular units extremely close together were dissected apart
also started to affect the results of Hair Restoration Surgery.

A reduced success in follicular unit transplantation was more frequent in hair restoration surgeries that were being performed by hair transplant surgeons undertaking follicular unit transplant surgery only infrequently. The fact was of much concern to the professional hair transplant surgeon. The primary reason for a reduced success rate was that the assistants of the hair transplantation surgeon lacked the expertise and experience in correctly isolating single follicular units and dissecting them at a fast pace.
Ensuring that the follicular unit remains intact and is dissected and implanted into the scalp in the shortest possible is essential for increasing the chances of the hair follicles surviving the process and growing. But whenever an assistant was not able to take care of this important aspect
it affected the results.

For the above mentioned reasons
a technique that leaves the follicular unit intact but at the same time advocates the use of three and four-haired follicular groupings for surgical hair restoration was evolved by the innovative hair transplant surgeons. This procedure was found to have many advantages over follicular unit transplantation.
A single hair follicular unit does not necessarily comprise a single hair and may contain 2-4 hairs in a single hole. When the follicular units are found very close to each other in the donor skin sample it is not advisable to separate them as it can cause iatrogenic damage to them. Advantage of this fact is taken to form three-and four-haired groupings when 2 two-haired follicular units or a three haired unit and one-haired unit are naturally placed very close to each other. A group (of 1-4 follicular units naturally placed close to each other) transplanted as a single graft results in superior hair growth and at the same time lessens the surgical damage and trauma to the recipient site.

The hair transplant procedure of using natural groups for the hair transplant surgery has many advantages:
1. It results in much quicker hair transplant procedure as it saves time for separating each follicular unit and less time is required for their placement.

2. Hair transplant procedure prevents iatrogenic injury to follicular units during the dissection phase.

3. It lessens iatrogenic injury during placement phase because follicular groupings are not as fragile as follicular units because of more tissue attached to them.

4. As this hair transplant procedure proceeds at a faster rate
it allows the grafts to be left out of the body for a shorter period of time and increases their survival rates.
5. The last but not the least important advantage of this hair transplant procedure is that it reduces the cost of hair transplant surgery and is there for affordable to the patient.
Besides the above mentioned advantages
the technique of grouping of hair follicles can serve as a crucial tool in an expert hair transplant surgeon's hands to create wonders through the hair restoration surgery! Success and a natural looking hair transplant requires strategic planning! The grouping technique does not undermine the importance of a unit follicular hair transplant but actually compliments it by conserving more single-haired follicular units for the defining the hairline. The 2-haired follicular groups can be used for gradation in the area immediately posterior to the hair line and use of denser
but not bigger
3
haired groups to provide the hair-density to the bald scalp behind. Besides saving the hair in the donor area for the future hair transplants this innovative technique of hair restoration surgery provides you the results which are just wondrous!

Female Pattern Hair Loss It Depends On The Genes

Friday, 14 August 2009

Female pattern hair loss is very common nowadays due to hectic schedules and stress. Stress is the main cause of female hair loss. Women rarely become bald
but hair loss is common. If more than 100 hairs falls from your head while applying oil or when you shower then you need to take proper steps to control hair loss.

Men usually become bald if their hair becomes thin
while women do not completely become bald. It is very rare and if it happens then it could be due to genetic factors. Women could lose some hair or sometimes the hair becomes thin which could be treated if proper care is taken or by consulting a hair specialist.

Androgenic alopecia is the most common type of hair loss in females. If lots of hair falls in a day and if you feel your hair is becoming thin then it is the perfect time to visit a dermatologist. If your parents were bald then the chances of you becoming bald is more. Hair loss or balding depends on the gene of the parents. Female hair loss could start at puberty and it is mainly due to hormonal imbalance. Women could also lose hair once they discontinue birth control pills
or even when they are pregnant. Physical and emotional stress could also cause hair loss.

There are various medications available for female hair loss. Homeopathic
ayurvedic
allopathic medication can be bought from stores. There are many homemade remedies
which would help in gaining hair and also thicken hair. While going for a treatment or hair restoration surgery it is advised to take professional advise. Consultation with dermatologists would help in determining the root cause of your hair loss. Around 25 million American females are affected with this type of hair loss.

Female Pattern Baldness Diagnosis and Treatments

Clinical features of pattern baldness in women usually occur during early teens and late middle age. This is shown by the gradual thinning of hair over the frontal area. Usually
pattern baldness in women is not accompanied by increased shedding of hair
but unlike telogen effluvium
hair loss may be seen from the start. The scalp becomes more and more visible as the disease progresses.

Most of the time
the central part of the head widens due to diffused reduction of the hair’s density
which involves the frontal scalp and crown. Some women may experience hair loss on some small areas of the frontal scalp while others may experience the effect on the entire scalp including the areas of parietal and occipital. During hair loss
women usually retain a rim of hair along the frontal hairline.

Laboratory Evaluation

Most women with pattern baldness have normal menstruation
normal fertility
and normal endocrine function
including correct levels of circulating androgens. Therefore
they would only need extensive hormonal testing when symptoms and signs of androgen excess become really visible. Laboratory measurement of serum total or free testosterone
dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate and prolactin are appropriate when hirsutism
severe unresponsive cystic acne
virilization
or galactorrhoea are present. Measurement of serum thyrotropin
serum iron and ferritin
and complete blood count may eliminate common causes of hair loss.

Differential Diagnosis of Androgenetic Alopecia

Androgenetic alopecia in women can be confused with the former condition. This is in spite of the fact that features of chronic telogen effluvium are distinct. Anyway
horizontal sections of a scalp biopsy help to distinguish the two conditions once the ratio of terminal hairs shrinks.

Morphology

As time goes by
the hairs in pattern baldness become progressively miniaturized. These hairs include the papillae and matrices
as well as the hair shafts. However
the degree of hair loss in women is not as extreme as it is with some men. Women with pattern hair loss have a mosaic of variable-diameter hairs in the affected region of the top of the scalp. Increased spacing between hairs makes the central part appear wider over the frontal scalp compared to the occipital scalp.

In some cases
hair volume may still appear normal but the hair would stop growing to its previous length and normally results to thin distal ends. Female pattern hair loss is seen on women by visual decrease in hair density while in men
it is by baldness on the affected areas.

Treatment of Androgenetic Alopecia

Hair loss is a result of abnormal hair cycle. Because of this
it is theoretically reversible. However
the current treatment options have limits in their performance and in some cases
only small improvements in hair density can be seen. Advanced pattern baldness may already be difficult to treat because irreparable damages may have already taken place on the follicular stem cell when inflammation surrounded the bulge area of the follicle. Some systematic treatment plans for this case include:
• The current treatment for pattern baldness is Minoxidil. The exact mechanism by which Minoxidil works is not known but the treatment appears to affect the hair follicle in three ways: it increases the span of time follicles spend in anagen
it rouses follicles that are in catagen and it enlarges the actual follicles. In effect
vellus hairs enlarge and are converted to terminal hairs
and shedding is reduced.

• Exogenous estrogen can be used to treat pattern baldness
but this regimen is no longer much in use because of Minoxidil’s efficacy.

• Finasteride has been effective on men with pattern baldness but definitely it was risky on women. This regimen is not advisable for women who are still in their childbearing age because of the presence of 5a-reductase inhibitors that may cause external genitalia abnormalities in male fetuses.

• Hairstyling
teasing
coloring
permanents
and the use of hair spray are means of coping with the cosmetic effects of pattern baldness. However
when the hair loss is grave
the affected person may opt to use wigs.

• Hair transplantation is another option since it has already been accepted in treating pattern baldness on men. Now
it is also being used to treat female hair loss although only a very few women go for this type of treatment because of the cost and the possible trauma that may go with it.

• For those women who have encountered ineffective and unsuccessful treatments for hair loss
surgery may be another option and thus
the most suited method for them.

Conclusion

Pattern hair loss in women is made up of many factors whose traits are genetically determined. It is possible that both androgen-dependent and androgen-independent mechanisms contribute to this strange form of hair loss. In women
it is usually patterned with the most marked thinning over the frontal and parietal scalp
and with greater density over the occipital scalp. Unusual hair loss in women may frustrate self-esteem
psychological well being
and body image. Because of this
it is quite vital for the physician to inform their affected patients that hair loss could bring about adverse effects on the quality of a person’s life.
